O1-Module1

Motivation

Learning is an active process which needs to be motivated and guided toward desirable ends.

According to psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan, there are three psychological needs in humans that determine their motivation:

  • The need for autonomy: to perceive oneself as the basis of one's choices;

  • The need for competence: to feel efficient and useful;

  • The need for social belonging: to feel included in the group.

These needs are considered innate, universal and essential. Satisfying them promotes optimal functioning and a feeling of well-being. The need for autonomy would be the most important of the three.

Much research shows that supporting autonomy in school promotes self-determined motivation and that this is associated with better learning and increased performance.

The work of the two researchers behind this theory shows that context, social and environmental factors can facilitate or hinder self-determined motivation. They reveal that it is possible to induce a subject to practice an activity that does not interest him. For this, the subject must perceive himself as the origin of his behavior, which thus becomes self-determined.

Learning by Doing with Project-based learning (PBL)

Learning by Doing with Project-based learning (PBL)

Project-based learning is a an active pedagogical approach in which students acquire a deeper knowledge through active exploration of real-world challenges and problems.

This approach integrates knowing and doing. Students learn knowledge, but also apply what they know to solve authentic problems and produce results that matter.
